Decision support tool for air-based BIPVT systems
The performance of a PV system deteriorates with increasing temperature. In a Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal (BIPVT) system excess heat from a PV is removed and used for space heating, domestic hot water or other useful means. The benefit of a PVT system is thus two fold: a) collection and conversion of more of the sun's energy and b) lowering PV temperature to improve PV efficiency. The Decision Support Tool (DST) optimises BIPVT system size to best meet the building demand for heating, cooling and electricity. Oversized PVT systems will contribute to either waste of collected thermal energy and excessive electrical power being fed back to the grid that may provide little revenue. The DST can be used to facilitate better design.
