The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre is a 6 Star Green Star- Education Design v1 accredited, multi-disciplinary facility that hosts a wide range of research and industry collaborations to address the challenges of making buildings sustainable.

Located at the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus, this beautiful new centre is alive with student research as a Living Laboratory and thrives on collaboration with industry.

The building was designed and constructed based on the principles of the Living Building Challenge, pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and construction with hopes to inspire communities throughout Australia to take action on sustainability.

Will highlight some interesting and innovative sustainable building products, services, technologies and initiatives from various organizations such as Evcco, Living Future Institute of Australia, The Brick Pit, Highlands GeoExchange, Tivok Energy, Wollongong City Council, Future World, TAFE Illawarra, Bill & James, and more.

Research Showcase

Our researchers will be showcasing their projects, and demonstrating the use of our field and laboratory equipment such as home energy monitoring, blower door testing, indoor environment monitoring, thermal cameras, electric vehicle control, photovoltaic systems, and of course the Team UOW Illawarra Flame Solar Decathlon house will be open to look through.

Get Involved

The SBRC survey investigates upgrades, renovations and energy use in our homes. Everyone should come to the Open Day and take part in the survey to assist SBRC researchers to discover ways to effectively use energy, making our homes more affordable places to live.

Information Sessions

Comprise of regular presentations in which we hope to inspire guests with project details, activities or concepts that they can take away to inform decisions in their own projects. Presenters include Mark Jones from Architects Edmiston Jones, Mary Casey from Living Future Institute of Australia, and Clayton McDowell from the Energy+Plus+Illawarra Project.

Expert Advice

The ‘Expert Desk’ is an opportunity to be able to ask for sustainable building or retrofit advice from a trusted source. We liken it to ‘building sustainability speed dating’, and we hope to inspire guests with project details, advice or concepts that they can take away to inform decisions in their own homes.

Tours

Come and investigate some of the key features of the first 6 Star Green Star- Education Design v1 accredited building in the Illawarra. The SBRC building was designed and constructed based on the principles of the Living Building Challenge, pushing the boundaries of sustainable design and construction with hopes to inspire communities throughout Australia to take action on sustainability.

Something for the Kids

We’re waiting at the construction zone for some labourers… let’s get started on building this home…safety vest and hard hat on, brick up a wall, connect the water pipes, lay the carpet tiles, paint the walls and learn roofing techniques. Start sustainability of housing by helping the kids understand construction with our Early Start Discovery Space colleagues.
